Tablature (Tabs) is the substitute of standard, sophisticated and elaborate musical notations and is popular among the amateurs. It is relatively easy to play the tunes with the help of the tabs.
We are giving below the tabs of a few tunes.
We have given the tabs in the "NOTATION" page
The disadvantage of the tabs is that tabs do not tell us how long and on which part of the rhythm pattern each note is to be played. Hence the tabs have a limited usage and we can play from the tabs only if we know the tune well.
We would like to add here that it is not at all difficult to learn the standard, sophisticated 'notation reading' if taught and learnt the right way! So instead of spending time in reading the tabs one should try to learn the standard notation, either solfage or staff.
In tabs we have to memorise the tune first and then play it, whereas in standard notation we play the tune first and SIMULTANEOUSLY memorize it!. Because with standard notation system we can play any unknown tune straight from the sheet.
Signs used in the Tabs
The hole numbers in our tabs are written keeping in mind the standard 12 hole Chromatic harmonica. If you have an economical 24 hole chromatic harmonica like the 'Tower' please combine the two 'channels' as a single hole, i.e. combine the 1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th,--------23rd &24th channels (holes) for the purpose of giving the hole numbers.
because different models are having their "Sa" at different holes. e.g. a standard 10 hole harmonica will have its middle 'Sa' at the 4th hole whereas the 12 hole harmonica will have its middle 'Sa' at the 5th hole and so on. After all why waste our time in finding the hole numbers when we can easily memorize the location of the notes directly and which is more scientific. Please believe us that in the same amount of efforts to find the hole numbers you can memorize the locations of the 'notes' on the instrument and you will be benefited more this way!
The symbols used for our notation system are as follows :
S = Sa P = Pa S* = higher octave Sa
R = Re D = Dha R* = higher octave Re etc,
G = Ga N = Ni *N = lower octave Ni
M = Ma M!= Tivra Ma, *D = lower octave Dha etc.
r = komal Re
g = komal Ga
d = komal Dha
n = komal Ni
